He had two criteria in classifying the constitutions. The first criterion was quality of the constitution. So on this basis Aristotle the constitution essay two kinds of constitutions, namely good or pure and bad or perverted constitutions, depending on the ability of a particular system to achieve justice.

He defined monarchy as a rule by a virtuous man and considered it as the best form of constitution. According to him, tyranny was the rule by a selfish man which was the worst form of the perverted system, the constitution essay.

In a monarchy or tyranny the supreme power is vested in a single man. In an aristocracy or oligarchy the rulers are a few people. In a polity or democracy the supremacy lies with the whole body of the citizens.

His difference between good and bad is something of interpretation and so this classification is unscientific. Essay 4. Modern View of the Classification of Constitutions: 1. Written Constitution: A written constitution is a written piece of document enacted in the manner of laws. The conscious and deliberate wishes of the people are reduced into writing after thorough consideration of all aspects of the matter.

It is drawn up by the representatives of the people. The constitution of the constitution essay USA was the first written constitution to be drafted by a Constituent Assembly. The constitution of India was enacted by the Constituent Assembly duly elected by the people for the purpose of making the constitution. The written constitution has a date of its commencement.

The constitution of India commence on 26 January A written constitution is precise, definite and systematic, the constitution essay. In the first place, the written constitution is definite and precise. Since all the powers and functions of the different organs of the government are written down there is no scope of one travelling into the territory of other, the constitution essay. A single document constitution has such advantages as greater precision, simplicity and consistency.

In the second place, the written constitution guarantees the fundamental rights. In a written constitution there is not only clear power of the various authorities but the basic rights of the people also. The result is that the government cannot behave arbitrarily and cannot take away the fundamental rights of the people. In the third place, a written constitution is a must in a federal form of government.

In a federation the central government and the provincial government both derive their power from the constitution and it is imperative that which power belongs to whom must be clearly laid down in the body of the constitution. There is no better way of having it than getting all such powers written down in the body of the constitution. So a federation will be unworkable without a written constitution. In the first place, a written constitution has the disadvantage of its too much details and rigidity.

The constitution of the USA with 7, words is a model of brevity, the constitution essay the constitution of India with Articles and eight Schedules is the wordiest of all national constitutions. The rigidity hampers growth and adjustment to the changing social and economic conditions.

And so there is the inherent danger of a revolution or political upheaval under a written constitution. In the second place, a written constitution is a lengthy affair. This unusually lengthiness may lead to disputes and litigations, the constitution essay. Experience shows that some written constitutions are too much detailed.

They invite disputes and litigation. In the constitution essay words, they inject too much rigidity in cases where flexibility is preferable. Again, the constitution essay, since a very long constitution says too many things on too many subjects, it must be amended time and again. This will make the constitution still longer. In the third place, the procedure in a written constitution is difficult and time-consuming, the constitution essay.

Written constitutions are not only likely to give rise to greater problems of interpretations than un-written ones. They are also harder to change. The corresponding merits of unwritten constitutions are that they tend to change gradually, continually and often imperceptibly in response to the changing needs.

But when a constitution lays down the exact procedures for the election of the President, for relation between the executive and legislative branches, or for defining whether a particular governmental function is to be performed by the federal government or a member province, then the only constitutional way to change these procedures is by means of the procedure provided by the constitution itself or by its own amendment.

This is not only difficult but time-consuming too. In an unwritten constitution there is nothing like an enactment of laws the constitution essay a Constituent Assembly composed of the representatives of the people. It is mainly a collection of customs, conventions, traditions and some written laws drawn unsystematically at different points of time.

It is a growth of historical accidents and chances. It has no date of commencement. The classic example of the unwritten constitution is the constitution of England. New Zealand and Israel are the other two countries with unwritten constitutions. As to the English constitutions written parts are chiefly the Magna Carta granted by King John in the thirteenth century. The second written installment of the constitution of England was the Bill of Rights of granted by King William III after the Glorious Revolution.

The The constitution essay of Settlement of and the three Reforms Bills are the other written parts of the British constitution, the constitution essay.

The gaps are to be filled up by the customs, traditions and national spirit of the people of England. In the first place, an unwritten constitution has the advantage of adjustability and adaptability, the constitution essay.

Socrates uses what is called the allegory of the cave to explain the importance of education and just leadership in society.

They correspond with four subsections: the allegory of the cave essay of which is understanding, next is thought, then belief, and the last is imaging. These prisoners are bound there, unable to move their necks and legs. Behind them is a fire providing the only source of light for them, but they cannot allegory of the cave essay the fire.

Between the prisoners and the fire is a wall, where there are people that hold up all different allegory of the cave essay of allegory of the cave essay above it to cast shadows against the wall in front of the prisoners.

The prisoners would suppose that the It tells the story of human beings living in a cave. They have been there since they were little. Unfortunately, this is not a normal kind of life we would think of.

These people were all sitting on the ground, tied in chains. Their necks, their legs, were all fettered, and they were only able to see what was right in front of them. They could not move their heads. Far above them there was a fire. Also, between them and the fire a wall was built, above which the puppets were shown.

The only thing those people were able to see was the shadow of those puppets and they mistakenly thought that this shadow allegory of the cave essay actually the reality.

When one of them was set free, walked outside the caveand finally saw the truth. Although I am not really sure about this, in my opinion what Plato wanted to say, is that most of the people look at the world through the prism of themselves, of what they see and experience in everyday life.

Through the vision, hearing, allegory of the cave essay, smell, taste and touch. And I guess, what we should do is to look at the world from different points of view, to fully understand it, to get to know the truth, the reality. Knowing what exactly the truth is might be really hard, because we are limited due to our senses. As I have mentioned it before, people experience The " Allegory of the Cave " by Plato represents an extended metaphor that is to contrast the allegory of the cave essay in which we perceive and believe in what is reality.

The thesis behind his allegory is the basic tenets that all we perceive are imperfect "reflections" of the ultimate Forms, which subsequently represent truth and reality. The purpose of this allegory defines clearly the process of enlightenment. For a man to allegory of the cave essay enlightened, he must above all desire the freedom to explore and express himself.

Plato's main concept of the cave is: people see reality as the visible world when reality really is more than the visible world. The cave represents the people who believe that knowledge comes from what we see and hear in the world.

The prisoners represent an ignorant, unenlightened, and narrow society. This would comprise of those who have not yet understood the meaning of life. The prisoners are without sun, without a higher understanding, and have limited understanding.

Those who are chained represent all human beings who have been forced to think in one particular way; The chains are symbolic of limitations that pull us away from the truth. These chains permit the prisoners only to see shadows replicated by a fire behind them. These chained prisoners are restricted to only what the fire allows them to see — their own perceptions. Because the prisoners cannot see what or who is behind them, they accept PART I - Listed below are items from the Allegory which have symbolic meaning.

a The world around us b regular people c Things we perceive as real d things that cloud our vision e an enlightened way of thinking f what is actually real g Enlightened philosophers such as Socrates PART II — Answer each of the following questions in complete sentences. They had both originally been closed-minded, but they became enlightened with time, allegory of the cave essay. The prisoner has to be drug out of the cave because at first, the light was so bright it hurt his eyes, so he returned to what he was familiar with.

This experience is a symbol that shows you must go beyond what you are comfortable with in order to become accustomed to a new, enlightened way of thinking. The blindness upon returning to the cave represents the inability to go back to an un-enlightened way of thinking. Allegory of The Cave Plato is the most creative and influential person among the disciples of the Socrates.

He wrote dialogues in which he frequently used the figures of Socrates to expose personal philosophy. He then illustrates that such kind of a person is the best as he or she is well equipped and therefore can govern the society because he or she has enough knowledge of what is ultimately most important in life but not just knowledge of techniques.

However, allegory of the cave essay, a person with such knowledge and skills will most of the time be misunderstood by those other ordinary people who are still in the cave and have not shared in the intellectual insight. This means that prisoners who are in the cave are not able to see reality, but only a shadowy representation of it.

The importance of the allegory of the cave lies in Plato's belief that in the world, there are some things which are only invisible truths found under the apparent surface of things that can only be grasped or understood by the intellectuals Introduction: An allegory is a kind of story in which writer intends a second meaning to be read beneath the surface story. I have spent nine hours a day lifting heavy automobile and truck batteries off the end of an assembly belt. I have risked the loss of eyes and fingers working a punch press in a textile factory. I have served as a ward aide in a mental hospital, helping care for brain-damaged men who would break into violent fits at unexpected moments.

But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was physically hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were dismal. First of all, the job made enormous demands on my strength and energy. For ten hours a night, my job essay, I took cartons that rolled down a metal track and stacked them onto wooden skids in a tractor-trailer.

Each carton contained twelve heavy cans or bottles of apple juice. A carton shot down the track about every fifteen seconds. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.

When a truck was almost filled, I or my partner had to drag fourteen bulky wooden skids into the empty trailer nearby and then set up added sections of the heavy metal my job essay so that we could start routing cartons to the back of the empty van.

While one of us did that, the other performed the stacking work of two men. I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the minimum wage of that time, two dollars an hour, plus the minimum of a nickel extra for working the night shift. Because of the low salary, I felt compelled to get as much my job essay pay as possible.

Everything over eight hours a night was time-and-a-half, so I typically worked twelve hours a night, my job essay. On Friday I would sometimes work straight through until Saturday at noon -- eighteen hours. I averaged over sixty hours a week but did not take home much more than one hundred dollars.

But even more than the low pay, what upset me about my apple plant job was the working conditions. Our humorless supervisor cared only about his production record for each night and tried to keep the assembly line moving at a breakneck pace. During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my my job essay was spent outside on the truck loading dock in near-zero-degree temperatures.

The steel floors of the trucks were like ice; the quickly penetrating cold made my feet feel like stone. I had no shared interests with the man I loaded cartons with, and so I had to work without job companionship.

And after the production line shut down and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone scrubbing my job essay the apple vats, which were coated with a sticky residue.

I stayed on the job for five months, hating all the while the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I quit, I was determined never to do such degrading work again.
